Loft & Attic Insulation

Loft Insulation

Insulating your loft, attic or roof is an effective way to keep heat in during winter and out during the summer. This will help reduce your energy bills. Installed correctly, loft insulation can pay for itself in as little as 2 years.

ROOF SYSTEMS

Get to know your Loft

Cold Roof - Systems

Insulation can either separate the attic from the living space to form a ‘cold roof’, this is done by installing the insulation on the attic floor.

Warm Roof Systems

On the other hand, installing the insulation on the underside of the roof will create a ‘warm roof’.

What is loft Insulation & how does it work?

Most loft insulation materials work by preventing the movement of warm air through the material. The fibres within the insulation are matted together in an ‘open cell’ nature. This allows the material to trap air, for the matting to be effective, the weave should not be overstretched or compressed as the structure trapping the air may be destroyed.

When should you replace your loft insulation?

If your loft insulation is over 40 years old, has been infested by rodents, has been compressed or has ever got wet beyond usual condensation, it would have started to degrade and will not be performing as it should. You could be paying 25% more then you need to towards your energy costs and with recent price hikes, this works out to an average of £500 a year for householders.

What are the different types of loft insulation & how is it made?

There are five main types of insulation which can be used in loft spaces.

Blanket insulation

This is extensively used in the UK typically laid on the loft floor acting as a giant blanket.

Blown-fibre insulation &
loose-fill insulation

We tend not to use or recommend this material for lofts, these are more commonly used for cavity wall as can create a mess and can be a nuisance for contractors within roof spaces.

Insulation boards

Boards would typically be attached to roof joists (underside of the roof) creating a warm loft, this would be mainly used in flat roofs or in a loft conversion.

Spray foam

We do not install or recommended spray foam insulation for domestic buildings, whilst spray foam has good thermal values it can interrupt building surveys. This can sometimes cause issues with mortgage lenders when buying and selling houses.

Typically, we recommended blanket insulation in which we use two main types.

SuperGlassInsulation
Superglass / Knauf – Both these brands produce a non-combustible, glass mineral insulation with Euroclass A1 reaction to fire classification.
Rockwool
Rockwool – Rockwool is made from stone wool, their pitched roof insulation is more costly although it performs high in energy-efficiency, fire classification and has great acoustic properties.
Therma-fleece-CosyWool-slab
Thermafleece – Whilst most costly, Thermafleece offer sustainable wool products which are long-lasting, safe to handle and itch free. Their loft insulation is made from 75% sheep wool, 15% recycled polyester, and 10% polyester binder with a high recycled content.

Insulation products are measured using R-value, a higher R-Value means the product is more resistant to allowing heat flow.
The higher the number, the better the thermal rating is.

How can we help?

Here at Pro-Insulate, we remove ineffective loft insulation and dispose of the waste following legislation. Should this be rodent related, our team of experts will hoover up the droppings and disinfect the loft area to neutralize rodent carried diseases and remove rodent scent trails. Our professionals will then reinsulate your loft with your chosen insulation material following building regulations for that material.

How will it be installed?

When talking, glass based products, the bottom 100mm layer will be carefully put in between the joist ensuring a small air pocket is in place which will help retain heat and prevents heat moving through the insulation.

The top layer of either 170mm or 200mm will be laid out perpendicular to the joists to create a sealed blanket of insulation making your loft void as economically friendly as possible to help reduce them ever increasing energy bills.

Most domestic size loft voids can be cleared and reinsulated in a single day by our team who will ensure every step is taken to make this process as pain-free as possible.

At Pro-Insulate we pride ourselves on taking care of the customer and their property so will always use dust sheets, shoe covers and fully vacuum and clean the working areas after the job has been complete.
