Attic ventilation

Over the last few decades issues with condensation in loft spaces have become increasing common.

Whilst condensation within a loft is relatively normal and not always harmful, excessive condensation over time can lead to problems such as dry rot, wet rot and mould. If left untreated, structural issues can develop as timbers become weak and no longer adequate for purpose.

So, before we start, what is condensation?

Condensation is the process where water vapor becomes liquid. In layman terms, condensation is essentially water droplets forms on cold surfaces where cold and warm air meet.

Why is condensation becoming more common within attics?

Over the last few decades people have changed their way of living, most properties now have 2 or more bathrooms, people are drying clothes on radiators, cooking and showing more and more often.

This all generates vapor.

People are also insulating their homes more and more to make their properties energy efficient which not only saves money but also saves the planet!

This is all good however does slow down the speed in which vapor can escape the building.

As vapor is carried more so in warm air and warm air rises, this means a lot of vapours is now going up into the attics.

What can you do to help?

There are many ways to control condensation within a loft space.

Whether you have a cold roof or warm roof system, the first thing is to check to make sure your insulation, which may be typical glass mineral roll or maybe a more modern, multi foil has been installed properly.

Secondly, you should check to see if your loft has adequate ventilation. Often, we see properties with clogged up soffit vents or sometimes no soffit ventilation at all.

Pro-Insulate are specialist in insulation meaning vapor control is always on the front of our minds. Often DIYers and sadly, some poorly trained tradesman, sometimes with the best intentions can really interrupt a properties vapor control system.

Multi-Foil

Sometimes it necessary to use a modern method of insulating, multi foil. This insulation is made up from many layers which slows the movement of heat. Multi foil is suitable in certain situations for roofs, walls, floors, garages, caravans, boats any many other places.

Loft Ladder

Here at Pro-Insulate, to offer the full loft package, we can install a variety of loft ladders. We usually opt for a two or three section, aluminium loft ladder which enables, quick and safe access to the average household loft. These ladders come with the standard V bar to enable manual sliding, or you can choose to upgrade this to a spring-loaded bar for additional assistance.

As a minimum, all loft ladder we are certified
to BS EN 1497, duty rating 150kg.

Furthermore, we do offer a range of more superior ladders mainly for commercial use which are certified to BS T 307, duty rating of 175kg.

Please note!

Whilst we can install a wide range of ladders, should your hatch require resizing, replacing or relocating, we would also recommend a builder for this work.

Suspended Ceiling Insulation

For suspended or false ceiling found mainly in offices or warehouses. We typically use bagged, glass wool insulation which is made to the size of the ceiling tiles, usually 600mm X 600mm or 600mm X 1200mm.

This way, the fibres are contained to maintain a clean, working environment. Having the insulation in sealed bags also allows for each tile to be removed separately to maintain ease for future servicemen & woman.

Here at Pro-Insulate, our team of professionals can work over night or weekends to avoid disruption to workplaces or meet critical deadlines.

Hatch Insulation & Downlight thermal Hoods

Sometimes it’s the small things which make a big difference, therefore at Pro-Insulate, we will always recommend insulating your loft hatch and capping downlights with thermal hoods.

Both loft hatches and downlights are notorious for allowing heat to escape. They are very often overlooked.

Tank & Pipe Insulation

It’s incredibly important to ensure your water tanks and pipes are insulated, especially if you have a ‘cold roof’ system. This will help prevent your pipes freezing and ensure your boiler is working efficiently as it should.

Insulating pipes and tanks will reduce heat loss ensuring your hot water heats up quicker and stays hotter for longer saving you money.

Rodent Infestations

Pro-Insulate can clear out your loft if it has a severe rodent infestation and bad odor. We will remove all insulation, vacuum droppings, disinfect the area and dispose of waste according to regulations. We can also re-insulate the loft to improve energy efficiency and neutralize any rodent-borne diseases and odors.
